October 20 Clearwater Election Platform
As your Councillor for Division 6, I will prioritize responsible governance, community well-
being, and sustainable development. Drawing from my professional background in financial
analysis and public sector consulting, I commit to transparency, efficiency, and decisions that
protect our rural way of life. Below are my top focus areas, informed by key challenges facing
Clearwater County, such as recent amalgamations, infrastructure needs, environmental risks, and
economic opportunities.
1. Fiscal Responsibility and Transparency
I will advocate for clear, accessible financial reporting to ensure taxpayer dollars are used
effectively. Building on my experience reviewing municipal finances, I’ll push for regular
internal audits, cost-saving measures, and public input on budgets. With my expertise in
streamlining processes across public and private sectors, I will assist in optimizing the
operation of the county’s financial processes to enhance efficiency. I’ll work to maintain
steady tax rates while investing wisely in priorities like road maintenance and services
avoiding unnecessary burdens on residents.
2. Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection
Clearwater County faces pressures from development, including projects that could
impact our natural landscapes, crown land camping, and recreational areas. I’ll oppose
initiatives like poorly planned solar farms that threaten community integrity and support
balanced growth, such as updating the Nordegg Development Plan to preserve our
foothills, headwaters, and agricultural lands. Addressing wildfire and flood risks will be
key, including promoting the AB Wildfire Status app and advocating for enhanced
emergency preparedness to safeguard our environment and rural lifestyle.
3. Infrastructure and Rural Services
As a transportation hub with high-load corridors and a strong agricultural base, our
county needs reliable infrastructure. I’ll prioritize investments in bridges, roads, and
utilities—such as the recent Mud Creek bridge project—to support farmers, businesses,
and residents. Following the January 2025 amalgamation of Caroline into Division 6, I’ll
ensure seamless integration of services, addressing gaps in water, sewer, and other
essentials to meet rural standards without urban overreach.
4. Economic Growth and Community Support
Leveraging the county’s Economic Development Strategy, I’ll focus on attracting
new businesses, and supporting local businesses in agriculture, forestry,
and energy sectors. I’ll champion initiatives that create jobs while respecting our history
and environment, including partnerships for investment readiness and resident-led
projects. Community involvement will be central, with drop-in sessions and collaboration
to address governance studies and regional needs.
5. Resident Engagement and Quality of Life
Our diverse wards deserve a council that listens. I’ll host regular forums, like the existing
councillor drop-in sessions, to gather input on issues from wildfire alerts to recreational
opportunities. As an outdoors enthusiast, I’ll advocate for maintaining access to crown
lands and promoting the unique elements of our community—people, history, and nature
—to enhance quality of life for all, especially in the wake of recent changes like the
Caroline amalgamation.
Together, we can build a resilient Clearwater County. I look forward to earning your support on
October 20, 2025. For more, visit russellbarnett.ca.
